Rome
A small snapshot on what to get when going through Rome, Italy:
Porchetta: look for this at the markets or at butchers. Some may sell this per slice or as a sandwich (the later is preferred but you can also make your own). If you don't know what this is, it's their equivalent to our turducken except it's pig on pig that's rolled up and roasted.
Maritozzo: something to get with your cafe in the mornings. This is a semi sweet bun with whipped cream. Good combo with a bitter espresso.
Pizza: go to Baffetto. The place itself looks like an old pizzeria (picture traditional/home feel) and has a good variety of pizzas including one with an egg on it. Another good spot is Ai marmi which has more of open feel and a place you'd enjoy with larger groups (think like cafeteria tables/food hall). Same same but different.
Cacio e Pepe: I know I texted this earlier but wanted to provide more info. This is a traditional Roman pasta dish, very simple in terms of ingredients, but so good. If there's only one thing you do on this list, this is it. Cacio e Pepe is one. Antico Arco is another.
Steak: if you're looking for a nicer sit down with great wine list and food, check out Girarrosto Fiorentino.
Gelato: I hope this goes without me saying. But I'm sure it'll be a draw with the weather you're dealing with. You'll run into a number of stores while walking around. One spot we enjoyed was Otaleg.
Pasta: there's an endless supply there and think you can't go wrong with most establishments. Osteria da Fortunata we really enjoyed that had homemade pasta and a good variety. Carbonara is another Roman pasta dish to get. There was another "fast food" one that sold only 2 types of fresh pasta each day... Pastificio Guerra.
